Nowadays, there are a lot of opportunities in web and graphics design. Unlike before when graphic design is limited to creating advertisements published in papers and magazines, clients can now post their “ads” online. In addition, firms and individuals now create their own sites online to reach out to a greater number of clients. To be able to do so, they have to create websites which are both aesthetically attractive and user friendly. Graphic and web designers can enter the scene to provide these needs. In this aspect, computer design enthusiasts and animation students have another area to look at when wanting to try out in the field. They may try doing freelance work in web and graphics design. At first glance, web and graphics design are primarily the domain of professional and full-time web and graphic designers. However, freelance web and graphic designers can fill the needs of other clients, which may not be met by fulltime and professional designers. Full-time and professional web/graphic designers may charge high for the services they provide, and may have their hands full meeting the graphic and web design requirements of their long-time clients. Related to this, these designers especially at the corporate level may not be inclined to accept services for non-commercial projects. Being small time and irregular are both the weaknesses and strengths of freelance web and graphic designers. As individuals, they may not possess enough money, equipment and software needed to produce many kinds of projects. On the other hand, freelance web and graphic designers may turn this into their advantage. Freelance web and graphic designers may specialize in a particular field, using a specific program. Unlike professional web and graphic designers, freelance designers can also negotiate the timeframe needed to accomplish their projects so that they can adjust the deadlines when issues arise. Hence they can balance their other commitments with those of their freelance web/graphic design work. They can also negotiate the amount that they can charge from clients. Now, how do interested students try out to become freelance web and graphic designers? First, they may try working with projects related to web/graphic design to gain experience. If possible, they save money to buy equipment and software for their freelance work. Once they had gained experience and “assets,” freelance designers can now set-up their own online sites to promote themselves and their works. They can post their portfolios online, post their resumes in their site, and ask clients for their needs through online suggestion boxes. While they wait for feedback from potential and prospect clients, beginning freelancers may search through websites and study books on web/graphic design. It is ideal that they identify the latest trends in web and graphic design, determine the unmet needs among small clients and observe the changes in client behavior and preferences. Once they get started, freelancers must deal with how they maintain their work. Some freelancers may have a fulltime job and or are still studying. Hence, freelance designers must allocate enough time so that they can do their projects without sacrificing their other commitments.
