Imagine Communications Group on October 14th 2009 announced details of its 4th generation mobile WiMAX network in Ireland. This new wireless technology provides high speed Internet and phone access at home and on the move. WiMAX, (Worldwide Interoperability for Microwave Access), is a new wireless technology developed to deliver wireless wide area network services. WiMAX provides wireless broadband access as an alternative to wired broadband like cable and DSL. WiMAX is a world-leading access technology that can be more cost-effective than fiber and cable broadband. WiMAX provides fixed and portable (soon also mobile), wireless broadband connectivity. The user has no need to stay within the direct line-of-sight with a base station. WiMAX can be expected to deliver capacity of 12 to 40 Mbps per channel, for fixed and portable access applications. WiMAX is backed by Intel, Google, Comcast, Motorola, Time Warner and other major players in the wireless technology segment. Intel is planning to manufacture WiMAX embedded laptops and PCs from next year. This new technology is at present being made available in over 145 countries by major telecom companies. The state-of-the-art WiMAX network technology will make high speed broadband available and affordable to businesses and consumers across Ireland. Imagine has appointed Motorola to supply its WiMAX equipment to bring the 4G service to homes and businesses throughout Ireland. WiMAX is of significant importance in Irish business and the economy, and perceived as a drive to move Ireland to the top of international broadband rankings and create technological and manufacturing jobs. The networks deployed by Irish Broadband utilize WiMAX silicon from Intel Corporation. Cloud computing or cloud based services have not made any marked impact in Ireland because of non-availability of high-speed internet. This till now, has been the major constraint for Irish business houses to reap the benefits of cloud services, be it SaaS (Software-as-a-Service) or PaaS (Platform-as-a-Service) or IaaS (Infrastructure-as-a-Service) model of cloud computing. Of these three, SaaS has already acquired a fair market. SaaS services can range from CRM to human resource to inventory control to ERP. SaaS delivers a single application through the browser to thousands of customers using a multi-tenant architecture. To use a cloud based service, the client needs as little as a PC and internet link. The more critical parameter of these two is the internet connection which must have enough download/upload speed. The advent of WiMAX in Ireland holds great promises for the Irish business organizations to avail this latest trend in business computing.
